I would offer him £170 on the basis that it needs a headshell see what he will go to? Or message him for best price he can do it for and decide then. One on at the moment from Germany for £243. He will check and set the bearings spot on and for even more money will rewire the arm too (cost there will be dependent on wire used but ask him for his recommendation he will not see you wrong). Quite often come up on ebay - keep your eyes peeled and also contact Johnnie at Audio Origami for how much he charges for "checkup and refurbishment". This looks just the ticket and would be in-keeping with the aesthetics of the deck. Great double gimbal bearings with a detachable headshell S shaped arm marketed to rival the SME 3009 at the time. Last but not least the Acos Lustre GST 1 base plate I believe fits to the existing SME cut out. I haven't tried it but it might be possible to fit the old Rega RB250 and 300 arms directly to the SME mounting plate (as it slots in a hole and a large bolt clamps it down. The infinity Black WIdow I think also used to come with an SME type mounting plate. If you like the SME it might be worth getting the after market damping trough and paddle which should improve things quite a bit with moving coils. The later ones came with a solid counterweight with no sorbothane insert. I repaired one of these using silicon mastic (as you use to go round the bath) and it did the job a treat. You will read reports of counterweight sag (if you get the one with the sorbothane insert in the counterweight). Get one for the right price second hand and feel fairly safe in the knowledge you can pass it on at no loss. Going price is about £200 to £300 second hand (I replaced an Origin Live arm with it). Mission 774 (original) which I use came with two bases - one to fit over the cut out for an SME (which I have over an SME cut out). I’ve reverted to using MC cartridges on my turntable. My deck is mounted with an SME 3009 S2 improved (non-detacheable) and I know I’m not getting the best from the setup due to the light weight nature of the tonearm, so I have come to the conclusion that its either time to change deck or tonearm.Īs such, I am wondering whether there are any other tonearms that use the same mounting as the SME and would be a fairly straightforward swap?
